Jaw joint disorder

How a "Bad Bite" can affect your whole body

Jaw misalignments caused by teeth grinding or clenching can lead not only to facial pain, but also discomfort in the back, neck, and head. These muscle tensions can even cause dizziness and are medically referred to as Craniomandibular Dysfunction (CMD).

The primary treatment is the bite splint, a removable device usually made of plastic, designed to relax the muscles and relieve tissue stress. This helps alleviate symptoms and restore proper jaw function.

Typical symptoms:

Teeth:

  • teeth grinding

  • teeth clenching

  • sensitive gums, receding gums

  • sensitive teeth, ground teeth

  • teeth don’t come together properly and the bite is not aligned

  • gaps due to loss of teeth or aplasia

Jaws:

  • Popping in the jaws

  • Jaw pain

  • Difficulties in closing and opening the mouth

Head and face:

  • Headaches or migraine

  • Eye pain

  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)

  • Pressure on the head

Throat:

  • Difficulties in swallowing

  • Snoring

  • Speech disorders

Body:

  • Tiredness

  • Neck tension

  • Shoulder and back pain

A CMD can be painful, but it doesn’t have to be.
