The removable braces are uncomfortable
When braces have been newly adapted or misaligned and are worn regularly, there may be a sense of pressure in the first few days. This is due to the modified movement of the tooth and such a feeling goes away when the braces are worn regularly for a few days.
If you think your removable braces are damaged or warped, or that the brace is uncomfortable or presses on the gums, then please arrange an appointment to see us at the clinic.
The plastic base is damaged
If the removable braces are broken or a wire has become seriously warped or broken, please arrange an appointment for a repair immediately.
The removable braces can no longer be worn or have been lost
If you cannot wear the braces regularly as planned, there is a risk that they no longer fit and the envisaged treatment results are not achieved. Please make an appointment with us immediately if you find wearing your braces is no longer possible or if you have lost them!
Cleaning the braces takes place after use with toothpaste and a separate toothbrush. The braces should always be stored dry in the box provided. An orthodontic check-up on the removable braces takes place usually every 3 months or so.
TIP: In the event of calcification, the braces can be cleaned with a mixture of water and vinegar.
CAUTION: They must never be washed in the dishwasher.
Getting used to a new set of fixed braces varies between people and lasts around 1 to 2 weeks
The archwire in particular may cause a certain degree of tension on the teeth in the first few days, which may even feel like quite a strong pulling sensation. Chewing and biting may be somewhat unpleasant to start with when the teeth and the periodontium get accustomed to the forces involved.
It is recommended to eat foods that don’t require much chewing in the first few days. These include dairy foods, soups, potato and noodle dishes, poultry or cooked mincemeat, fish and soft vegetables. Nuts and grains, spinach and finely chopped salad, sticky foods such as chewing gum and toffee may be problematic. Fruit should be finely chopped at any rate.
The inside of the lips coming into contact with the brackets can initially be uncomfortable
We recommend a special wax for cushioning and smoothing the metal parts of the braces. The initial restrictions described at the beginning are perfectly normal and not a cause for concern, as the whole periodontium and jaw must get accustomed to this new situation. This pressure sensitivity usually disappears fully after a short period of time.
If this is not the case, or if you have other issues with the braces, please call us to make an appointment. We shall try to help you immediately.
Lime deposits do not occur below the brackets and bands (the tooth is protected here!) but around the bracket or band if cleaning is inadequate. After professional cleaning of the teeth, the surface of the teeth should be sealed to protect the area around the bracket and the band.
Regular and reliable oral hygiene should be performed for the entire duration of orthodontic treatment. Both the teeth and the appliance should be cleaned correctly after every meal. Many orthodontic corrections are carried out with fixed braces, which are trickier to clean. Cleaning should take place after every meal, so after breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and it should take place with a toothbrush and an interdental toothbrush. Also, please clean the spaces between teeth regularly with dental floss.
If wearing fixed braces, inadequate oral hygiene quickly leads to inflammation of the gums and visible, lasting damage to teeth. Professional, regular support for oral hygiene is very much necessary and not a luxury. It is best to arrange regular dental check-ups.
We also recommend cleaning teeth once per week with Elmex gel as well as a mouthwash after cleaning teeth at night to protect against cavities.

Naturally, there is no need to only eat soup when wearing fixed braces! You can eat a perfectly normal diet after a brief setting-in phase during which it is easier to eat soft foods.
Here are a few tips:
It is prudent not to bite directly into harder foods so that the brackets do not go missing. Cut hard, raw fruit, vegetables and bread rolls etc. into smaller pieces
Do not have chewing gum and sticky toffees (Maoam, toffee, sticky sweets in general)! These will definitely damage the brackets!

Try to carefully bend back or press on the end of the wire with a spoon handle, forceps or the eraser on the end of a pencil. If this is not possible, place a little orthodontic wax (which you can obtain from us) on the end of the wire. Failing that, use sugar-free chewing gum.
CAUTION! Protruding ends of wire may lead to soft tissue injuries. The use of cutters or other tools in the oral cavity is strongly discouraged!
Make an appointment with us to repair it!
